Realms
Most cultivation stories climb a ladder of realms. The early rungs have settled English that readers expect:
- 练气 (liànqì): Qi Refining or Qi Condensation
- 筑基 (zhùjī): Foundation Establishment
- 金丹 (jīndān): Golden Core
- 元婴 (yuányīng): Nascent Soul
Higher realms vary much more between stories and translators. Pick one rendering per realm, use the story's own ladder, and do not borrow another series' names for it.
Sect titles and forms of address
Sect relationships work like family ones: 师兄 is Senior Brother, 师姐 Senior Sister, 师弟 and 师妹 Junior Brother and Junior Sister, 师父 or 师尊 Master, 掌门 or 宗主 Sect Master, and 少爷 Young Master. Translating them into English is the established choice in the genre, and it reads better than pinyin for most readers.
Do not reach for Japanese suffixes: -san and -kun have no place in a Chinese story.
Names, techniques and places
Write Chinese names in pinyin without tone marks, family name first: Li Mingxuan, Ouyang Xue. For techniques and artefacts, translate the meaning when it is descriptive (Nine Heavens Thunder Palm) and keep pinyin only for words the story treats as names. For sects and places, choose once whether to translate (Azure Cloud Sect) or keep pinyin, and stick to it.
Build the glossary at chapter 1
The glossary is the job. For every term record the Chinese, the English you chose and a note on what it is (a realm, a sect, a technique). Read it before each chapter, add to it as new terms appear, and when you change your mind about a term, change it everywhere. Across a series that runs for hundreds of chapters, this is what separates a readable translation from a confusing one.
How Panelift handles it
Panelift keeps a series memory of places, skills, techniques, ranks, factions and power systems. Each is translated once and reused in every later chapter, and you can edit any entry and lock the English you prefer. Names are written in pinyin without tone marks, family name first, and titles are translated into English (Senior Brother, Sect Master, Young Master) one way throughout, with no Japanese-style suffixes.
Questions
What are the cultivation realms in order?
Stories differ, but the common early ladder is Qi Refining, Foundation Establishment, Golden Core and Nascent Soul. Higher realms vary from story to story, so follow the one you are translating.
Should cultivation terms be translated or kept in pinyin?
Translate titles and realms into their established English (Senior Brother, Golden Core); keep pinyin for words the story treats as names. Whichever you choose, use it the same way in every chapter.
How do I keep terms consistent across hundreds of chapters?
Keep a glossary of every term with the English you chose, read it before each chapter, and change a term everywhere when you change it. Panelift does this per series and lets you lock entries.
